父が私に繰り返し言っていたことがあります。末期がんの診断を受けたあと、父は「死」を受け入れませんでした。多くの人が医師の言葉に従い、ただ諦めてしまう中、サー・ジェイソンは違いました。首と顔に70回ものコバルト放射線治療を受け、あらゆる標準治療をやり尽くしたあと、父は自らの命を救うために、藁にも縋る気持ちで世界を巡る旅に出ました。

有意義に過ごせるかどうかは、すべては自分次第です。誰もあなたをベッドから引っ張り出して起こしてはくれません。誰もやる気を銀の皿に乗せて差し出してはくれません。自分自身の心と体、そして魂を守るのは、自分自身の責任なのです。
今月のコラムは、いつもとは少し違います。今回は、私の父についての記事を書きました。
数日後、私はマルタへ旅立ちます。20年以上の付き合いになる友人が、エルサレムの聖ヨハネ騎士団の「ナイト・オブ・グレース」に叙任されるのを見届けるためです。この騎士団は世襲騎士団で、サー・ジェイソンも私も所属しています。次回の7月のコラムでは、写真や楽しいエピソードをたくさんご紹介しますね。
