Are Prebrewed Tea Blends Good For You?

As tea continues to grow in popularity around the world, people are finding new ways to include the drink in their everyday lives. While many tea drinkers brew their favorite blend at home, there are some that buy the bottled version, pre brewed and instantly ready to drink.

But at the end of the day, you’re getting the same nutrients from both drinks. Right?

Depending on what you’re drinking and what you want to get out of your tea, you might want to make sure you brew it at home – particularly if you’re looking to get the health benefits of green tea.

According to studies, bottled teas tend to have lower level of antioxidants than an equivalent amount of home brewed tea – even if the bottle claims that it is an excellent source of antioxidants.

That isn’t the only difference you can find between the two.

Comparing Bottled vs. Home Brewed Tea

Bottled teas are good for a few reasons. Mainly, people might want to buy a bottled tea because it’s easy and ready to drink. Others find that the flavor is better than home brewed tea.

It turns out that the flavor coming from bottled teas could be due to larger amounts of sugar. Not all bottled teas are high in sugar, but it is not uncommon for bottled teas to have higher levels of sugar than home brewed tea.

The biggest difference between the two types of teas, however, is the presence of polyphenols.

Polyphenols are nutrients that are packed full of antioxidants. They’re also incredibly common in green teas, giving the drink the huge levels of antioxidants in every cup.
But polyphenols are fragile, and the longer they’re steeped, the more likely they are to break apart and vanish. Because bottled teas are brewed long before they’re served, many polyphenols can die during the process.

Also, bottled teas are being sold on a per-unit profit, so companies aren’t afraid to cut corners where they can. One way they do this is by using less tea and more water than someone would traditionally use when preparing tea.

As a result, there is a fraction of polyphenols in bottled tea compared to home brewed tea.

Home Brewed Tea Is Proven To Be Healthier
Bottled teas may not to be as healthy for you as home brewed teas. Aside from the additional sugar found in some blends, bottled tea isn’t bad for you – it just May not have as many benefits as a traditional cup of tea will.

Of course, this is all research that has been done assuming plenty of factors – for example, the type of teas used, the bottled teas, how much water to tea in home brewed tea, and more. These studies also don’t take into account the additional benefits you can get by drinking herbal blends, much like the blends that Sir Jason Winters creates.

If you do prefer bottled tea to home brewed tea, keep in mind, you could be getting many more benefits if you prepare your brew at home. Shop Now.

The Flavor And Benefits Of Chaparral

We carry a variety of different green tea blends, each of which is meant to offer a specific flavor while giving some of the benefits that the individual herbs are known for. That’s one of the beauties of our herbal tea.

We’ve showcased some of the herbs we use in our herbal blends in the past, but let’s spend some time talking about chaparral.

The first thing to know about chaparral is that, much like tea, it comes from the leaves of a shrub. Chaparral comes from the arid Southwest, particularly the Baja region of California and Mexico. When you find chaparral in a blend, it’s typically a ground version of dried chaparral leaves.

Chaparral is a common ingredient in herbal blends, and those who drink it understand why. If you put the right amount into your drink, you’ll get the perfect amount of flavor and potentially some of the benefits the herb is known for.

The Benefits Of Chaparral
We wouldn’t include an herb in our teas if we thought it was bad for you!

Chaparral has been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. Native Americans in the Southwest originally used the herb to help ease stomach pain, and modern chaparral drinkers might use it for the same reason.

However, additional uses for the herb have been realized over time. One of the benefits that users have found is the anti-inflammatory property of chaparral. The herb is used to reduce the soreness of areas that are inflamed.

This anti-inflammatory property is one reason chaparral is commonly used in herbal tea blends. The herb is often used to help sore throats, so when you combine it with a hot tea drink you can see why chaparral users opt for a blend with the herb in it!

Chaparral has also been used in the past to soothe the pain caused by arthritis, another benefit of the anti-inflammatory agents.

The key is to use the right amount of chaparral, something that we’ve been careful to do. Too much chaparral might irritate the body, so we’ve measured out the perfect amount for our teas and supplements.

What Does Chaparral Taste Like?
If you were to find a chaparral leaf out in the wild, you probably would want to avoid eating it. Chaparral by itself is incredibly bitter; putting too much chaparral in any drink would make it difficult to stomach. Which is why Sir Jason carefully crafted his blend with just the right amount of chaparral. Many people even prefer it to the taste of our sage tea blends.

If you’d like to reap the benefits of chaparral, without drinking the tea, then you should definitely try our supplements – particularly the Tribalene with chaparral. This supplement is made with the same ingredients found in Sir Jason Winter’s herbal tea blend, but packed into an easy to take tablet!

Should You Drink Green Tea While Pregnant?

Green tea is a super-drink that offers far more health benefits than most other types of drinks. Also, because it’s mostly water, you tend to stay hydrated while getting the benefits of anti-oxidants in green tea.

But for how healthy green tea is, is there a chance that it’s unhealthy for unborn babies?

Pregnant women are often forced to radically change their diet and depending on your current tea-drinking habits, you might have to change the amount of green tea you drink if you’re expecting.

Fortunately, the general consensus among experts is that you don’t have to cut out green tea entirely – but you should definitely keep track of how much caffeine you drink.

Keeping Track Of What You Drink
Because pregnant women need to drink more water than when they’re not pregnant, tea becomes a great way to get your minimum amount of fluids.

Also, green tea has tons of benefits that can keep soon-to-be mothers healthy during pregnancy.

But there’s a limit to how much green tea pregnant women should drink – or anyone for that matter. The main reason for this is the caffeine found in green tea. Yes, green tea has much lower levels of caffeine than black tea or coffee, but there are still traces of caffeine to be found, and too much caffeine can lead to problems with pregnancy, according to one study.

There is no sure-fire method for determining how much caffeine is too much for a fetus, but if too much caffeine is bad for adults then there is definitely a limit. This is why pregnant women often cut out coffee entirely. But green tea has less caffeine, so this might not be necessary.

When deciding whether or not to continue drinking tea, women should consider the total amount of caffeine in their diet. A cup of green tea doesn’t contain too much caffeine, but adding it with other caffeinated products will only build on the total amount of caffeine consumed.

The Bottom Line
If you’re pregnant, the research shows that you don’t need to cut out green tea entirely. Experts disagree on exactly how much caffeine is too much, but expecting women should play it safe and limit themselves to around 200 mg a day – roughly 2-3 cups of green tea, depending on the type of tea you’re drinking.

To be safe, 1 or 2 cups of green tea a day will give you less than the 200 mg of caffeine, meeting the standards of most studies. Of course, some soon-to-be mothers may decide to cut out green tea entirely to avoid any issues which is a perfectly reasonable decision.

Keep in mind that green tea accumulates; if you drink 3 cups of green tea for 5 straight days, then you’ve suddenly consumed 15 cups of green tea in less than a week. Fetuses metabolize all chemicals slower than adults, so the caffeine can linger. Try to keep track of how much green tea you’re drinking each week.

It’s up to expecting mothers to decide what they do while pregnant, but research shows that a limited amount of green tea should not pose any threat to the unborn baby.

Most importantly, a pregnant or expecting mother must always talk with their doctor before taking any vitamin, supplement, tea, etc.

Cooking With Sir Jason Winters Green Tea, Part II

A little while back we posted an article that featured some great cooking ideas using Jason Winters Green Tea. There are tons of clever ways people use green tea, and we’re always looking for new ways you can include your favorite blend in a dish or drink.

Well, summer is just about here, so we wanted to share more recipes that you can include some green tea in. Enjoy!

Sir Jason Winters Ochazuke
When we first posted our Sir Jason Winters green tea recipes, Sir Raymond Winters had recently finished a PR trip to Japan. During that trip, prominent Japanese chefs made some beautiful – and delicious – looking dishes. One Japanese dish that embraces the flavor of green tea is Ochazuke, which is essentially green tea poured over rice.

To make Ochazuke, you’ll need Japanese rice crackers, steamed rice, seaweed, wasabi (if you’re bold enough), and, of course, green tea.

This dish can be created a number of ways, so there’s no exact measurement you need to follow. Just be sure to start with a bowl of rice and add enough green tea to submerge all the rice. From there, place smashed Japanese rice crackers, seaweed flakes and whatever else you want into the dish.

If you want to add fish, Ochazuke also goes incredibly well with salmon. Broil the salmon until golden brown. After, remove the skin and put it in your bowl with the other ingredients.

Sir Jason Winters Green Tea Ice Cream
The perfect summer snack! To prepare this dish you will need to use an ice cream maker.

Here’s our recipe for green tea ice cream:

  • 1 ½ tablespoon of Sir Jason Winters Green Herbal Tea (remove from tea bags)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2/3 cups white sugar (or natural sweetener)
  • 2 eggs

Start by mixing the Green Herbal Tea powder with the milk. Then add the heavy cream with the green tea mix while cooking in a pot on low heat. Stir it for 5-7 minutes, until the entire mixture is heated. Strain out the green tea leaves if desired.

After, mix the sugar and eggs in a bowl. Gradually add your green tea mix to the bowl, making sure to mix everything together before adding more mix.

Put all of this back into the pot and cook it over low heat for 5 minutes or so, stirring it and making sure everything is mixed.

Remove it from the heat, let it cool to room temperature then put it in the refrigerator for 4 hours or more. After it’s cool, run it through your ice cream maker.

And there you have it – delicious Sir Jason Winters Green Tea Ice Cream!

Green Tea Drinks
If you’re living in an area that gets pretty hot in the summer, then you’ll probably want to switch away from the classic hot water steeping you often use to prepare tea.

Most iced teas you find use black tea, but there are plenty of great iced green tea recipes you can follow! Here is one of our favorites.

Prepare green tea how you normally would (steeping it in hot water). While the water is still hot, also add some honey, agave or something similar that you normally mix with your tea. Put the tea in your refrigerator to cool off, and be sure to add some ice. Once it’s cold, add mint leaves to the drink. Mix it up, pour it over more ice and enjoy!

Another green tea drink we’re enjoying right now is a mango-green tea hybrid drink, perfect for while you’re sitting outside on a sunny day.

The recipe we use is as follows:

  • 2 parts iced green tea
  • 4 parts mango juice
  • Mint leaf on top to spruce it up

Just make the iced tea the same way as described above, but don’t include any honey or another additive. The mango juice should make this sweet enough as is!

If you have any favorite green tea recipes for the summer that didn’t make this list, feel free to share this post and add your recipe on social media!

How Much Tea A Day Is Healthy?

Tea, particularly green tea, is full of health benefits. But can you have too much of a good thing?

It turns out that yes, you can. While drinking green tea is bound to give you health benefits, too much of the wonder drink can begin to have negative side effects on your body. Though these side effects are hardly serious.

It’s important to know what happens when you drink green tea.

The Benefits Of Lots Of Tea

The benefits to drinking green tea are numerous, and you can pile on the benefits by adding cups of green tea to your daily routine.

One benefit to green tea is caffeine. You might not feel the effects of caffeine from one cup, and that’s generally a good thing. A little bit of caffeine can help your metabolism work faster.

Because green tea has much less caffeine than drinks like coffee, you’ll be safe having more than one cup of tea.

Another benefit to drinking lots of green tea is hydration. When you drink tea, only a small percentage of it is actually tea – about 0.4% – while the rest is water. Most people are chronically dehydrated, so adding tea is a clever way to drink water while getting great flavor and health benefits.

The Side Effects Of Lots Of Tea

Too much tea can cause slight problems; fortunately, they are hardly serious.

One common issue with drinking too much tea is the caffeine intake. Caffeine is good in small doses, but too much caffeine can change the way your body works. You can start to become addicted to caffeine, and you stop naturally producing energy.

You’d have to drink a lot of tea for this to happen, and unless you’re drinking more than 8 cups a day, this isn’t something you should be worried about.

Another thing to consider about tea is what you add to it. Green tea on its own is relatively harmless, but other herbs added to the mix can change that.

Your body will react differently to some herbs, so it’s best to avoid large doses of anything you don’t understand well. Sugar and honey help tea taste even better, but they can add calories and start to counteract against the weight loss properties of green tea, so best to use them sparingly or not at all.

Aside from these, there really aren’t many problems to be concerned about.

How Much Tea Should You Drink?

If you want to get the maximum benefits of green tea, you’ll want to drink up to 6 cups a day. That might seem like a lot to some people, but you’d be surprised how quickly you get hooked on the flavor!

The 6-cup rule works well when you drink high-quality green tea like Sir Jason Winters. There really isn’t a huge drawback to drinking too much tea, but you can get plenty of benefits from adding a few cups to your daily routine!

What’s The Best Time Of Day To Drink Green Tea?

When it comes to flavor, health benefits and satisfaction, there isn’t much that can beat green tea. The wonder drink is capable of helping people lose weight, giving people more energy and improving the overall health of whoever drinks it.

While you’ll always be getting the positive effects of green tea, have you ever wondered if there’s a way to get more of a certain benefit? If someone starts drinking green tea to spur weight loss, they would want to know the right way to drink it.

It turns out that it doesn’t just come down to what type of tea you’re drinking, but also when you drink your green tea.

Depending on the specific type of benefit you’re looking for, there’s a time of day that you should make sure to sneak in a cup of green tea.

Drinking Green Tea for Weight Loss

There are a couple ways that green tea helps you lose weight, and both involve burning away chemicals. Green tea acts as a stimulant, so it kickstarts your metabolism and increases the flow of your gastric acids, helping to stop the cumulation of fatty cells.

If you’re looking to lose weight, be sure to have green tea during meals – particularly meals that have fattier foods. By combining the foods with the tea, you’ll end up burning the food faster and flushing out some of the bad chemicals that lead to weight gain.

Keep in mind that green tea does increase the flow of acids. Combined with some types of foods, this extra acid can mean an upset stomach. Be sure to keep note of what foods may or may not act up when combined with green tea.

Drinking Green Tea for Energy

Green tea contains caffeine, so you’ll be getting energy when you drink it no matter what time of day it is.

But new studies show that drinking green tea on an empty stomach could actually put some stress on the liver. This is mostly because of the caffeine in the beverage.

To avoid this, make sure to eat something before you have your first cup of tea for the day. As long as you have some food in your stomach, you’ll be able to reap all the positive benefits of green tea without any negative side effects.

Drinking Green Tea for Healing Properties

If you’re looking for the healing properties of green tea, be sure to brew a cup between your meals.

Having tea between meals gives your body time to sift through food and tea individually. Depending on what you eat, the chemicals in the food can negate the chemicals in green tea. To avoid this completely, you’ll want to give your body a chance to start to digest some of the food before switching to tea.

Try waiting an hour or two after you eat a meal to drink your tea. This will give your body plenty of time prepare for those healing properties you can only find in green tea!

Cooking With Sir Jason Winters Tea

Recently, prominent Japanese chefs prepared some incredible dishes using Sir Jason Winters tea. Not only did the food look good, but the flavor was incredible!

While cooking with tea might seem like an unusual idea, it is actually a growing trend. With the right recipes, you can create delicious, healthy dishes that feature the flavors of tea!

Green Tea Cooking Trends
Before you even begin cooking, think about the flavor of tea – For instance, green tea. It’s mild, but there’s enough flavor that it can perfectly complement the other ingredients. Green tea drinkers know this, so you can start to think about what types of dishes can benefit from an herbal blend or green tea infusions.

Perhaps the most common way to cook with green tea is by grinding up loose leaves, or using the pre-ground tea leaves found in a teabag, and combining them with other herbs. There’s no real set amount on how much to add to your meals – but just to be safe, you might want to stick to about ½ tablespoon. If you want more flavor you can always add more.

If you’re looking to create a healthy dish that features tea, mix your ground tea with herbs like basil, mint, chives, and cilantro. Combine this with white or brown rice to create the perfect side dish for any main course.

This type of blend can be added to other foods, too. Whenever you sprinkle herbs over your meal, you can always add in Green, Oolong or Herbal Tea.

When in doubt, just keep in mind that you want to use a tea that would pair well with the meal.

Green Tea Butter And Oil
An easy way to add green tea to most dishes is by steeping your favorite blend in melted butter. The butter will absorb all the flavors of the tea, and that flavor will be transferred to whatever you’re preparing. From here, you can apply the butter to just about any recipe – cookies, cake, bread and more, all with the added flavors of tea.

Here’s a recipe for green tea butter:

  • 1 bag of Sir Jason Winters Tea bags
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of warm, melted butter
  • Once blended, put it back in the refrigerator to cool off and create a green tea butter spread

You can easily do the same thing with oils that you use for cooking. One of our favorites is using green tea oil to prepare the perfect breakfast omelet!

Our recipe for green tea oil:

  • 1-2 bags of Sir Jason Winters Tea bags
  • 1 cup of oil (whichever type you prefer to cook with)
  • Let it steep in warm (not hot) oil for up to 10 minutes

Specialized Green Tea Drinks
Green tea infusions don’t stop with food! There are plenty of other drinks you can prepare that make use of your tea.

If you make healthy smoothies, green tea is the perfect addition. Just put some in the blender with your other favorite ingredients.

Green tea is also great for steeping into cocktails. It’s best to use bitter tasting alcohols like gin since the tea acts as a perfect complement, but you can always add it to your favorite cocktail. For maximum effect, you’ll want to steep the tea leaves in the cocktail for at least a few days. It takes some time, but the flavor is definitely worth it!

Lastly, it isn’t exactly a drink, but green tea soups can be a tasty spin on another soup you already enjoy. Just take any vegetable broth that you would normally use and add ground green tea to the mixture.

There really are endless ways that you can add green tea to foods and drinks. As green tea continues to grow in popularity around the world, expect to see more green tea recipes and meals popping up around you!

Loose Leaf vs. Tea Bags: Which Tea Is Best?

Most tea drinkers have a preference when it comes to their blend. Maybe they prefer green tea, black tea or something completely different. But what many tea drinkers don’t consider is how they’re brewing their tea.

When preparing your cup of tea, there are two main options: loose leaf or tea bag. While they might not seem that different, there are some important subtleties that could completely change the way you approach your brewing. Both options are going to give you an excellent flavor and delicious drink, but one may be better for you than the other.

Tea Bags: An Easy Option

One of the biggest reasons people opt for tea bags is how easy they are to use.

When you purchase tea bags, they come pre-packaged with the perfect amount of herbs to brew a cup of tea. There’s no packing required – you just need to open up the bag and place it in the cup.

Because they’re designed to be ready-to-brew, tea bags are always going to be a popular tea option. While they might not offer the same flexibility as loose leaf blends, they’ll still provide a great tasting and consistent flavor.

Loose Leaf Reigns Supreme

If you’re a true fan of tea, then you’ve probably already adopted loose leaf as your go-to for tea. As far as quality tea goes, loose leaf is going to give you the most out of your herbal drink.

Why is loose leaf “better”? Because it can adapt to any type of situation you can think of. You can control exactly how much tea you’re releasing into your cup. For instance, you might enjoy drinking a specific blend of Sir Jason Winters herbal tea. Maybe you prefer a stronger, bolder flavor tea. Or perhaps a little less mild. With loose leaf, you can put in whatever balance of tea you want.

Which Is Right For You?

No matter which tea option you pick, you’ll still be getting the potential health benefits that come with drinking tea. And for some people, one might not be better than the other – it all comes down to personal preference.

If you enjoy drinking tea but don’t want to get too involved in the blend, makeup or consistency of your tea, then a tea bag works perfectly. You’ll get an awesome cup of tea with minimal effort. Remember, tea bags are designed to taste great when brewed, so you can’t go wrong with them.

If you’re looking for a specific flavor or blend, or want more control over the potency of your cup, then you should probably go for loose leaf.

You really can’t go wrong with either choice – it just depends on what you want out of your tea!

The Art Of Brewing Green Tea

Green tea is one of the most versatile herbal drinks you can find. It goes well with other herbs, is great all year round and has more health benefits than can be listed in one sentence.

However, you might be preparing your green tea wrong – at least for your own needs.

Depending on what you want to get out of your tea, there is going to be a certain way you should approach the brewing.

Because green tea is so diverse, especially when blended with other herbs, there’s no definitive perfect way to brew every single cup. But if you want to get something special out of your tea, you can try changing some parts of your brewing routine.

Different Ways To Brew Green Tea

Before you decide which way you want to brew your tea, you need to think about what type of green tea you’re drinking.

If you’re going for straight green tea, you’ll only have to let the leaves steep for a few minutes. If you’re adding in other herbs, such as sage, you’ll need to let those leaves spend more time steeping.

Green tea is more delicate than other types of tea, so it takes a little bit of love to make the perfect cup. Sure, you can throw a green tea bag in a cup of near-boiling water and let it steep, but you’re going to enjoy your tea much more if you prepare it specifically to your standards.

Brewing Green Tea For Medicine

Some people choose green tea because of its potential medicinal properties. There are plenty of benefits to drinking green tea, and the addition of some herbs to your blend is only going to make it better.

One common mistake people make when brewing tea for medicine is that the water they use is too hot. While you definitely want to use hot water, heating it up too much can end up burning out some of the good properties in green tea.

By most standards, you’ll want your water to be in the 160-175 degree Fahrenheit range. This allows your green tea to steep without losing any of the benefits.

If you’re going for weight loss, preparing iced green tea could be a better option. Jason Winter’s Pre brewed green tea is perfect option for people who want to enjoy the benefits, but with a shorter brewing time required.

Brewing Green Tea For Flavor

There’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to brewing green tea for flavor. This is mostly because everybody is going to enjoy different flavors found in their blend.

The best thing to do when looking for that perfect tea flavor is follow the instructions that come with the tea. We’ve created our Sir Jason Winters blends with specific brewing methods in mind, and we think that it yields the best overall flavor.

However, you might disagree with us on what the perfect cup of tea tastes like! You can always change the flavor of your tea by using slightly warmer or colder water, or by using a little more or a little less of the blend than we recommend.
